The stuff we see, touch, and use everyday might not, at first thought, seem museum-worthy, but there are fascinating tales hiding within even the most below-average hunks o' junk out there. Sometimes all it takes is context to elevate the mundane to legendary status.
The Stable channel of Chrome OS has just been bumped to 31.0.1650.61, bringing several user-facing changes. First up is more customization of the Shelf (the status bar and dock at the bottom of the screen), which can now be moved to either the left or right side — It can still be auto-hidden as well.
In the Shelf you'll also notice the app launcher has been pinned to the leftmost spot (or topmost if the Shelf is side-mounted) so that it doesn't move as you add more pinned apps to the Shelf. The launcher icons, app icons and status tray have also been slightly redesigned to be more touch friendly. A nice little visual touch can also be seen in your profile picture for logging in changing to be in sync with your Google+ picture, if you've chosen to have that feature.
This latest release of Chrome OS is available for all Chromebooks out there, except for the original Acer C7, the HP Chromebook 11 and HP Pavilion Chromebook. Your Chrome OS device will pull down the update automatically, or you can always check for the update manually by typing chrome://help in the URL bar.

After all, the social network recently scrapped the new design it debuted to intrepid early adopters in September and brought its older look back. The familiar buttons take their place on top of the app again, replacing the menu that allowed testers to swipe their way from one stream to another. Twitter took elements from both designs, though, so it isn't a complete throwback to the old interface. Alpha users, in particular, see an entirely different Discover section that features a basic list view and a detailed view that shows sample tweets. Also, the prompt that pops up when you post a tweet comes with a note that reads "Are you in [city, state]?" below "What's happening?" According to TechCrunch, the microblogging site has been getting mixed feedback from its testers, which could've influenced the firm's decision. Whatever the real reason is, it looks like Twitter has more than a few kinks left to iron out before it unleashes an overhauled app to the general populace.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Four Marines were killed Wednesday during an operation to clear a range of unexploded ordnance at Camp Pendleton in Southern California, a Marine official said.
The Marines were clearing the range of unexploded ordnance when the accident occurred at 11 a.m. at the San Diego County coastal base, said a Marine official with knowledge of the incident who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.
The identities of the dead were withheld pending notification of relatives. Base officials released no details on the accident. They said authorities were investigating the cause.
"We offer our heartfelt prayers and condolences to the families of the Marines lost today in this tragic accident," said Brig. Gen. John W. Bullard, commanding general of Marine Corps Installations West at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. "Our first priority is to provide the families with the support they need during this difficult time."
The deaths come about eight months after a mortar explosion killed seven Marines during a live-fire training exercise in Nevada.
A military investigation determined human error was to blame for that accident. According to the probe's findings, a Marine operating a 60 mm mortar tube and ammunition did not follow correct procedures, resulting in the detonation of a high explosive round at the mortar position.
The investigation also determined the mortar team involved in the accident had not conducted "appropriate preparatory training."
